Ackworth School has always produced more than its fair share of athletes and musicians!
At one point there were no less than eight Ackworth hockey players in the various Yorkshire
county teams and three players in the North of England squad. Rumour has it that on more than
one occasion the school has sent more students up for D of E Awards than the rest of the county
combined. It is a fact that this page was prompted by my realisation one day that my three
absentees (from a second form registration) were all involved in different national
trials - in equestrian, swimming and athletics events.

This list is certainly not complete since many of our heroes are very modest about their achievements.

This page is constantly being added to!

Dr Fiona Wood

John Bright, MP

This text is from a morning reading given by the Headmaster on the topic
of one of our Old Scholars . .

Charlotte Fowler

Charlotte has just won the title of "Young Yorkshire Lady Golfer of the Year"
A remarkable result for someone who is still in the third form. If you see this young lady
on the golf course I suggest you pay attention if she shouts "Fore!"
In the last two years her awards include:- The Peace Cup, The Flora Goddard Trophy Gold Medal, Best NETT @Yorkshire Girls, South Yorkshire Schools Trophy, The Lucy Newby Trophy Cup, Moortown Junior Masters Gold Medal, Hilbrough Junior Open Best Girl.

Julia Selalmazidy

Julia won a scholarship to the school and has repaid us many times over with her
wonderful music -
you can click here for a taste!!
Everyone who has listened to her is confident she is going to be a major star!

Keeley Fawcett

has made an impressive start to a theatrical career while still functioning as an excellent student.
She has appeared in "
Heartbeat" and "At home with the Braithwaites" on YTV and, as well as a string
of successes in school productions (including Dorothy in the
Wizard of Oz), has toured the country
singing and dancing in the
Dame Edna Everage Show.

Tim Murray

was chosen to play the fanfare to welcome the Queen to the Opening of the Welsh Parliament. Tim started to play the trumpet while at Ackworth and quickly proved that he had a talent as big as his personality!!

Celia Wolfe

a member of the School staff, has produced a book about her father's war diary.

James Willstrop

won the British Junior Squash Open Under 14 section in 1997 in straight sets against very tough opposition! I think I am right in saying that the outside competition was so strong that he was the only English finalist. James is currently the national U19 champion.

Matt Palmer

was one of the hockey players mentioned above. He still plays club hockey - which he reports is actually much tougher than the county game.

Rachael Whittaker

has notched up a remarkable set of results in a relatively short competitive career.

Stephen Wood

achieved the special distinction of being made a Queen Scout.

Marcus Ginn

while in the Sixth Form at Ackworth, won second prize at the National Science Museum in the Arthur C Clarke short story competition. Here is his story. An article appeared in the Guardian Online Supplement on 28/3/96.

Daniel Marshall

left Ackworth after finishing his GCSE's in June 1994. He received a 6th form scholarship from the RAF, as well as a Flying Scholarship and Leadership Training Course at Grantown-on-Spey. He has, subsequent to that, managed to get into the RAF as an officer, which in present times of defence cutbacks is no mean feat.

Alan Avery

is a member of staff and has just written and produced our first school video. It took the form of a story about an aspiring pop singer - David Lee (Sixth Form) was typecast in the role. An article appeared in the Yorkshire Evening Post on 18/3/96 with a picture of Malcolm West, Jenny Bailey, Alan Shepherd, Neville West, Marcus Ginn, Mary Musgrave, David Lee and Gareth Freeman. We hope to put a .mov sample on this page soon!

Hong Kong Contingent

Samuel Tse, Ken Wong, Vincent Tong, Tony Lam and Stead Lee all appeared in an article on 22/2/96 in News Extra about Chinese New Year celebrations which were held here - complete with Dragon!

Jenny Wheeler

appeared in the local press at the beginning of 1996 as she won a Flora design competition.

Giles Bramwell, Toby Batley and Lewis Jardine

appeared in a variety of papers - including the Yorkshire Post - for their roles in Bugsy Malone.

Stella Hodkin, Julia Hunt, Rob Carroll and Yousef Abdalla

all appeared in local papers last summer when they made the most of the School's Travel Scholarship Scheme.

Jennifer Hill

is currently National Clog-dancing Champion for her age group.

Esinam Adoboli, Celeste Kabwah and Mair Allen-Williams

appeared in a story 'School For All Reasons' in the Yorkshire Post, 19/10/95.

Davor Pavlovic

was in the local papers since he escaped the war zone of Bosnia for the tranquility of Ackworth.

Jennie Longden

has played her way to the second round of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition.

Malcolm West

won the Arkwright Scholarship - a national award - for his design work.
