The Mill House, Ackworth

Mill buildings from west - click to enlargeThis rather beautiful house was probably built around 1400 - and along with The Mason's Arms may be one of the oldest buildings in the village. The Mill (which can be seen at the bottom of the map below) was built in the 1600's and was of considerable size as can be clearly seen in the pictures. It eventually came into the possession of the School who used some of the water for a swimming pool! It was sold to the family who own it today roughly 50 years ago. The Dam was filled in around 1930 and there are currently many houses and a school - appropriately named Mill Dam School - where the water used to be. At the time the pool was filled in, it was considered to be a health hazard and local people still remember the smell just before this step was taken!!
