Welcome to our local history resource.

We are certainly surrounded by history here. Pontefract & Sandal castles are interesting ruins and York is not too far away. Richard II died at Pontefract castle and the area was famous for its liquorice - hence the poem by Betjeman. Ackworth Youth Choir have performed a musical version of the poem. Wentbridge claims to be the birthplace of Robin Hood - and rather more certainly, Nostell Priory was the birthplace of John Harrison - the clockmaker who created such wonderful machines that they still perform with the astounding accuracy that allowed them to make the first practical calculations of longitude at sea. Luke Howard - who named the cloud formations - lived in Ackworth Court and his daughter founded the Howard School. You can also search for more information at the West Yorkshire Archaeology Website.
